It is the university's largest faculty and second oldest after the Faculty of Medicine. Established in 1843, it has over 250 tenured or tenure-track professors, over 6,000 undergraduate students, and over 1,000 graduate students. The faculty has an active students' union known as the Arts Undergraduate Society of McGill University. With 22% of all students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, it is McGill's largest academic unit. The Arts Building, built in 1839 and designed by John Ostell, is the oldest building on campus still standing. Located immediately in front of the steps is the tomb of the founder of the university, James McGill. The building lies over what was once Burnside Place, James McGill's country home. Most of the departments are located in Leacock, its adjacent building. ==Departments== The faculty includes a number of Departments responsible for program delivery.
